Fresh Graduate Investments

Earning money is never an easy task. You contribute your energy and time to earn money. That is why we called that “hard earn money”. However, you still can see some of your friends do investment on things that depreciate in value as time pass. Below are few things that fresh graduate likely to invest instead of stock market, property and precious metal.

Handphone

Most fresh graduate will get themselves brand new handphone or nowadays more likely named smartphone as their smartest investment for their salary. After several months, brand new phone launching again with improved specification. Phone camera improved from 2 mega pixel to more than 10 mega pixel in just 5 years.

Laptop

Lifespan for a laptop usually stay between 3-5 years. After this period, your laptop can hardly do anything besides surfing web and watch movie. No space and no enough ram for you to install new program on it.

Car

One of my friends drive a new saga cost him RM40,000 with 10% down payment and loan for 9 years.  Owning a car also means you need to pay for your car insurance, car maintenance and car petrol as well. These definitely will affect your money cash flow. You pay your money to others as soon as  you get your salary. So how can you build up your wealth without paying to yourself first?

Travel

With some money in the pocket after several months to one year of works, fresh graduate usually like to travel to see the world. This definitely cost you some. After you return to the workplace, all back to normal again but your pocket definitely lighter than before!

As you can see, all the above investment depreciate with time in value. That isn’t what fresh graduate should do.

P/s: I don’t have any post recently due to the limited time to manage this blog. All my time was contributed to works. I use my energy and  time to earn money. That’s definitely not what I want. Still trying hard to get out of the rat race.

  1. Handphone i think i have bought a unit or 2 since graduate but it wasn’t any expensive ones. I don’t own a car until today but i am almost 28 years of age. Sharing car with family members. Sharing is caring! ^^

I just bought a 2nd hand VAIO from my friend. I guess i am one of the last in my group of friends to have a laptop.

I do travel quite a bit in a year. Maybe one local trip and one oversea trip. I will go to Singapore quite often because my best buddy is there.

That’s about all on what i do after i graduate. ^^

  2. I own 2 handphones, one for my wife and the other one for myself, but will never change to new one until they are totally worn out.

I own 2 cars. One for my wife and the other one for myself. The public transport in JB is totally out and we can’t move without a car. Anyway, we are working at a totally different area.

I own a 7-year-old desktop but not laptop. It is still working fine for me.

I do travel, with my family, occasionally provided I have budget.

One thing for sure, I invest first before any spending. I believe the next important part is to plan and work toward what you need based on priority. Yes, earning is not easy. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether you are a fresh grad or not, it will be better to plan carefully before spending.

Good thing about invention of smart phone is that, it makes those regular phone relatively cheap! RM300-600 for a good regular. Laptop is productivity tool, everyone should have one instead of good HP. But it’s also very cheap nowaday, it won’t matter even if it’s slightly more expensive, an IBM thinkpad can last 4-7 years and still top-notch after that. Car is unavoidable in our environment but for fresh grad to pay 1/2 or even 1/3 of the paycheck for car installment is no-no. If one really like to travel, he/she shouldn’t holding back, he should draw a budget for it instead.

All of you are wonderful and real rich people.:) I also own a just-for-calling handphone. I find that this kind of handphone price is stable. It won’t depreciate more.

And then I have my 4 years old laptop which most probably just can used for surfing and watching downloaded movie. My cdroom and keypad spoiled already. XD

I also didn’t own a car. I stick to my new motorcycle for daily works.

After almost one year after graduate, I still haven’t travel anywhere yet.

Ya, but before invest in property, they need to invest in themselves. At least a book regarding financial.
